Family & Farm
Is is fall! Fall is my favorite season. I love to see the fall colors splashed across the hills. This time of year, I begin to think about campfires, hot cups of tea and spending the thanksgiving holiday with friends and family.
Our youngest calf can be seen burrowing into the hay, as there are now some cool mornings and evenings.
The orchard is past bearing fruit and the young trees that struggled through the hot summer are beginning to lose their leaves.
Each morning I enjoy seeing our 2, 5 & 9 year old make their way to the barn to feed the chickens, pigeons, rabbit, turkey, quail and ducks. The ducks hear them coming and begin their crescendo of quacking in anticipation. The laughter of the children floats back to my porch where I sit on the swing gently rocking our small baby. I have enjoyed this little ritual ever since his birth nearly 6 months ago. Before I know it, the cold will prevent me from this special time out in the fresh air. I try to drink in each time, to savor the moment, in hopes it will carry me through the wintertime!
I would like to tell you our story and how Overholt's Farm Market began!
Part 1
It all started on a beautiful, breezy day on the west coast of Florida, where my husband and I said, "I do." If you want to know the history of Overholt's Farm Market and farm, we have to start there! We had many guests at our double wedding, as we shared the day with my husband's sister and her fiancé. After a service that is traditional to our faith, with lots of preaching and singing, we fed all of our 1400 guests at tables brightly decorated, near the ocean. Delicious, tender, barbecued water buffalo meat, buttery potatoes and creamy cheesecakes were on the menu.
Following this amazing day, my husband and I jetted off to Europe to spend several special weeks together on our honeymoon. We toured many wonderful places and spent time with Nathan's friends from his many earlier years of travel to Europe. My favorite part of the honeymoon was a cozy little stay above the Irish Sea.
It was most likely the most relaxing and calmest part of our marriage! Before we were married a year, we brought our precious oldest son into the world. We were enamored with him, as were the two pre-teen boys living in our home at that time.
We soon began to talk about taking our family to live somewhere in the country, rather than the busy hustle and bustle of the city we were in. Many were the dreams and and much talk went into where we should relocate to. By the time we had three children, we were ready to begin looking for land. And so we did - up and down hills and valleys from Alberta, Canada to Alabama to Ohio. Tennessee kept calling us, so we made a decision to buy in that state. With 40 listings in hand, we spent time looking at each one, narrowing down our search. Why did we settle for the land we did here in Buffalo? We liked the easy access should we ever choose to launch a retail store and it was within our budget!
That was 2010 and we didn't move onto the property until 2017. Seven of our children were born in Florida and frequently had their toes in the sand. All the while, were were dreaming of moving to our country home and planning for it financially, as well as praying for God's perfect timing to move there.
Those Florida years were good. We were busy with operating our landscaping and lawn care business, raising a family and taking care of our little farmette we were privileged to have on the edge of the city.
In September 2017 our time in Florida came to a close and life began in Tennessee! In part 2 I will tell you about our beginnings in this wonderful state, in the little town of Buffalo, near Hurricane Mills.
